Chromium alum is used in the tanning of leather as chromium (III) stabilises the leather by cross linking the collagen fibers within the leather.
Chrome alum can be added to other alum to grow lavender or purple crystals.
It is commonly used to prepare a chrome alum fixing bath as well as a hardening agent for gelatin.
